About The Herald of Christian Science

Herald-Online is the official website of The Herald of Christian Science. It is part of the JSH-Online family, which provides access to Herald content as well as the English language content of the Journal and Sentinel.

The Herald is published by The Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, the publishing arm of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. Together with christianscience.com, Herald-Online and JSH-Online aim to extend and promote the religion of Christian Science as taught by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the author of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Herald-Online gives access to 14 Heralds (four print/online and ten online only) as well as numerous informal translations of articles into other languages.  Each of the four print Heralds includes a fully searchable archive of all articles published in the Herald from 1903 to today and audio content from 2000 to today.

The mission of Herald-Online is to stay abreast of the times in fulfilling the purpose for the periodicals as stated by Mary Baker Eddy:  “I have given the name to all the Christian Science periodicals. The first was The Christian Science Journal, designed to put on record the divine Science of Truth; the second I entitled Sentinel, intended to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love; the third, Der Herold der Christian Science, to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth;...”  (Vol. 1, No. 1, of The Christian Science Monitor, November 25, 1908,  “Something in a Name”).

The Mission of the Herald

In 1903, Mary Baker Eddy established The Herald of Christian Science. Its purpose: "to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth." The definition of "herald" as given in a dictionary, "forerunner—a messenger sent before to give notice of the approach of what is to follow," gives a special significance to the name Herald and moreover points to our obligation, the obligation of each one of us, to see that our Heralds fulfill their trust, a trust inseparable from the Christ and first announced by Jesus (Mark 16:15), "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."

Mary Sands Lee, Christian Science Sentinel, July 7, 1956
